Pohon bonsai dapat dikatakan ideal, apabila pohon tersebut memiliki batang dengan diameter yang makin ke atas semakin mengecil, dimulai dari bagian batang yang dekat dengan akar. Pohon dikatakan memiliki dahan yang ideal bila dahan ada di sisi depan-belakang atau kiri-kanan saling bersilangan satu sama lainnya. Jarak antardahan makin ke atas makin sempit. Bentuk akar ideal adalah akar yang bila dilihat dari atas, menjalar ke segala penjuru. 3. Gaya Bonsai Semi Cascade Han-Kengai Ada pula gaya bonsai semi cascade atau semi menggantung yang dikenal dengan sebutan han kengai. Gaya bonsai ini, memperlihatkan batang yang menjuai ke bawah, tapi hanya setengah dari tinggi pot. Batang bonsai tumbuh tegak dalam jarak yang pendek dengan tinggi batang utama sejajar dengan bibir pot dan tumbuhnya ke samping. Kemudian, bagian ranting atau cabang lainnya menggantung melewati bibir pot. Sementara mahkotanya tumbuh mengikuti batang utama, bahkan bisa juga sejajar dengan bibir pot bagian samping. Gaya Bonsai Sharimiki Kalau kamu melihat gaya bonsai ini dari bawah, kamu akan menemukan keuinkannya. Yaitu, beberapa kulit batang di bawahnya ada yang menglupas. Hal ini bukan tanpa disengaja, ya. Selain faktor tersebut, cukup sulit untuk mempertahankan pohon untuk tumbuh ke bawah, karena arah pertumbuhan secara alami pohon adalah mengikuti sinar matahari dan berlawanan dengan arah gravitasi sehingga secara natural tanaman untuk tetap tegak. Akan tetapi dengan campur tangan manusia, kita bisa membuat pohon bonsai yang tumbuhnya menukik ini dengan mudah. Gaya bonsai air terjun ini, akan lebih bagus jika ditaruh pada pot tinggi, sehingga kita akan bisa melihat lekukan bawahnya dengan lebih mantap. Pohon itu tumbuh tegak untuk bentangan kecil tetapi kemudian membungkuk ke bawah. Pohon biasanya tumbuh di atas tepi pot, tetapi cabang berikutnya bergantian kiri dan kanan pada kurva terluar dari batang berbentuk huruf S.
