However, likely the biggest difference in the 35mm vs 50mm debate is price. In this head-to-head matchup, 35mm lenses are far more expensive. For example, where a Nikon 50mm f/1.4 lens can be found for around $450 brand new, a Nikon 35mm f/1.4 lens will run you about $1,700. Where you can get around this, though, is in buying pre-owned lenses.
The distance to the subject changes to keep the subject the same size in the frame. The 85mm lens has a longer focal length than the 50mm, which means the same thing happens as with the 35mm-50mm comparison. In the 85mm photo the background appears closer, and it is blurrier than the background in the 50mm photo. Yes, quite sure. I should have used a 1.612 crop factor but I got lazy. If you want the same Field of View (FoV) as given by a 50mm lens on FF, you need a 31mm lens, which is slightly closer to 28m than 35mm. If you want the same FoV as given by an 85mm lens on FF, you need a 53mm lens on Canon APS-C.

Bokeh Nation! Today I finally got a chance to give you all my perspective on the 35 vs 50. Many of you have asked about this comparison for a very long tim
To find right the lens, you divide 50mm by 1.5, which gives you about 33mm. Since you probably don’t have a 33mm lens, using a 35mm prime lens on a DX format Nikon camera like the D500 will give you roughly the same field of view as a 50mm on your Full Frame Nikon D810.
The 5D combined with the 35mm gives an insane feel, given that the 5D already has really good low light capabilities. I found though that the 35 was more adept for those cinema quality shots. The 50mm, as pointed out will be great for interviews. Far better than the 35's. The 35mm f1.8 opens up 1.33 stops more, so a bit strange to compare them "wide open". Both lenses are sharp enough over their entire range. The 35mm has the advantage of the added f1.8-2.8 range, and is a bit sharper at f2.8. The 40mm has much nicer bokeh rendering and less barrel distortion, and the advantage of being able to focus much closer. .
